York Theatre Royal
The York Theatre Royal is one of the oldest theatres in the country beginning in 1744. It is situated on the former grounds of a medieval hospital, St Leonards. The theatre provides theatre, dance, opera, musicals and pantomime.
The Grand Opera House
The Grand Opera House was originally designed to be a warehouse. However, it was later converted to the fantastic Opera House that it is today, providing all forms of live entertainment and this also includes a popular pantomime.
Theatre @ 41
Theatre@41 can be found central to the City of York and close to the city walls. It is a creative hub and performing arts centre that is also open for hire for meetings and a rehearsal venue.
Joseph Rowntree Theatre
The Jospeh Rowntree Theatre is a community run performing arts venue providing a wide range of live entertainment. The building was originally intended to be a place for recreation and education and you have 365 seats to choose from!
Friargate Theatre
Friargate Theatre is a venue for the Riding Lights Theatre Company and can be found close to the Jorvik Viking Centre on Friargate. Check their website for whats on at the time of your visit!
The Drama Barn
The Drama Barn features student productions and offers two plays a week during term time. Check their website for the latest listings and to book tickets!

You typically do not have to look far for live music in York, many of the central public houses and bars have some form of live music to offer. However, we have hand picked some of the major live music venues in York we think you'll enjoy! We have included a Google Map to help you locate them!
The Crescent
The Crescent is a popular concert and events venue that also features a fully licensed bar. The building is a former working mens club that has been converted into a prominent live music venue in the City of York.
The Basement
The Basement has a fitting name as it is found downstairs at the York City Screen Picture House. It is a very popular live music and comedy venue in the city centre and it is also fully licensed.
York Barbican
York Barbican is a very popular live entertainment venue featuring music and comedy events. It is famous for holding the UK Snooker Championships. It is the largest music and comedy venue in the city centre.
Castle Howard (near York)
Castle Howard is more commonly known for its large stately home and gardens open to the public. However, it also provides entertainment too with concerts held at this location. It resides in the Howardian Hills an area of outstanding national beauty.
The National Centre of Early Music
The National Centre of Early Music is located in a Grade 1 listed St Margarets Church. They have a full events schedule that attracts an audience of all age groups.


The York Vaults
The York Vaults promises to provide quality entertainment, great sound and fantastic beer! It is a very popular live music venue with a full event schedule throughout the year.

Vue Cinema (Clifton Moor)
Vue Cinema is an out of town cinema complex found at Clifton Moor (we recommend using a no.6 bus from York). The complex has many auditoriums featuring the mainstream movies. There are restaurants local to the cinema too.
Everyman Cinema
Everyman is a very popular cinema found on Blossom Street, close to the city centre. It has a very popular food menu and you can eat at your seat. You can even order from their Spielberg Menu using Deliverooo!
York City Screen
York City Screen is a very popular cinema for both visitors and residents featuring the mainstream movies and some classics too. There is a riverside cafe as well as The Basement Bar below that features live entertainment and events.
Cineworld
Cineworld is a new addition to York found opposite the Vanguard Shopping Park (we recommend using the Monk's Cross Park and Ride)). It features all the mainstream movies and is situated in a recently built venue. There are many restaurants and eateries in the area too. Sadly, Cineworld have filed bankruptcy and therefore may be closed shortly.

Tenpin (Clifton Moor)
Tenpin is a popular and well established ten pin bowling alley at Clifton Moor that also features a Laser Tag attraction too. Tenpin caters for parties and has 28 lanes available.


Hollywood Bowl
Hollywood Bowl is a new addition to York found at the York Community Stadium. It has 24 state of the art lanes making the venue very popular. We recommend using the Monk's Cross Park and Ride from the city centre.
Puttstars
Puttstars is a venue featuring mini-golf fun and you don't need the skills of Tiger Woods to play. It is found at York Community Stadium near the Vanguard Shopping Park. We recommend using the Monks Cross Park and Ride service from the city centre.
Forest Park Golf Club
Forest Park Golf Club is situated just out of the city near Stockton On Forest. It is a 27 hole golf complex. Located in the Vale of York, the course is flat and very scenic.






York Golf Range
York Golf Range is a popular driving range and also provides tuition to both the young and old. There is a 9 hole course as well as crazy golf too!






Rowntree Park
Rowntree Park next to the River Ouse on Terry Avenue is an historic park related to the Rowntree chocolate family. It has 6 tennis courts, a skate park, two table tennis and a basketball court! There is a cafe available and in close walking distance from the city centre.
Fulford Golf Club
Fulford Golf Club promises that their members and visitors leave having a fantastic experience. They are one of the best golf courses in Yorkshire!






Heworth Golf Club
Heworth Golf Club consists of an 18 hole golf course as well as a warm welcome! It also has a restaurant and a professional golf shop!






York Footgolf
York Foot Golf is golf with a major difference - you use your feet! It is situated in the village of Skelton (A19) and it is a 15 minute bus ride from the city centre (19,29,30,31).






York Community Stadium
Situated on Kathryn Avenue in Huntington (Monks Cross Park and Ride) resides the new York Community Stadium. It is both a football and rugby stadium and features leisure facilities for the City of York.
York Sports Club
York Sports Club was developed in 1966 and it features some outstanding sports facilities. There are also function rooms available to hire for events. It is also on the Rawcliffe Bar Park and Ride route.

Shopping can be a fun form of entertainment too! York's Shopping Experience is.somewhat unique because it covers a wide variety of retail therapy. What is mostly unique is the narrow shopping streets that feature artisan independent trades, the historic Shambles market as well as broad shopping squares featuring high street retailers. It also features some out of town shopping centres such as Monk's Cross, Vanguaard, Clifton Moor and McArthur Glen Designer Outlet shopping parks. We have included a map and recommended bus services to help you get there!
Monks Cross
Monks Cross Shopping Park is a large retail complex found just out side of the city centre. We recommend using the Monks Cross Park and Ride from York.
Vangarde
Vangarde Shopping Park is probably one of the most environmentally friendly you've ever seen, and it features popular High Street retailers as well as eateries. Again we recommend using the Monks Cross Park and Ride from the city centre.
Designer Outlet
Designer Outlet features some outstanding prestigious shops of various wares huddled together in one shopping centre, You can easily visit by using the Designer Outlet Park and Ride from the city centre.
Clifton Moor
Clifton Moor Shopping Centre is found north of York and consists of supermarkets, home improvement and furniture retailers as well as clothes, toys, department stores and mainstream eateries too!
Coppergate Centre
Coppergate Centre is a compact but fully featured shopping centre in the heart of York. It is also home to the Jorvik Viking Centre and Hole in Wand attractions. It features some prestigious shops of varying kinds including Fenwicks, Top Shop and more!
